Course: Learn to Use the Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard
www.planning.org/learn/course/9250858/
This course brings to life the existing written Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard (PIRS) guidebook through interactive eLearning modules. The course is designed for planners and allied professionals that are helping to build community resilience.
Report: Hazard Mitigation: Integrating Best Practices into Planning Report
www.planning.org/publications/report/9026884/
This report seeks to close the gap that often exists between hazard mitigation planning and other local planning and regulatory land-use processes. It introduces hazard mitigation as a vital area of practice for planners; provides guidance on how to integrate hazard mitigation strategies into plans; and shows where hazard mitigation can fit into zoning and subdivision codes. The report closes with recommendations to help planners move ahead with introducing hazard mitigation into local planning processes.
Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence (CRC)
coastalresiliencecenter.unc.edu
The mission of the Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence (CRC) is to conduct research and education to enhance the resilience of the nation’s people, infrastructure, economies and the natural environment to the impacts of coastal hazards such as floods and hurricanes, including the effects of future trends. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill leads the Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence.
FEMA
Hazard Mitigation Planning Resources
www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/risk-management/hazard-mitigation-planning
Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with state, tribal and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying these risks, they develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation plans are key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction.
Mitigation Best Practices
www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/risk/hazard-mitigation-planning/best-practices
Mitigation Best Practices are stories, articles or case studies about individuals, businesses or communities that undertook successful efforts to reduce or eliminate disaster risks.
State Hazard Mitigation Officers
www.fema.gov/grants/mitigation/state-contacts
FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance grant programs are provided to eligible applicant states/tribes/territories that, in turn, provide sub-grants to local governments.
Climate Change

Institute for Sustainable Communities
The Institute for Sustainable Coastal Communities prepares coastal communities absorb, adapt and respond to disturbance such as hazardous events, hurricanes, coastal storms and flooding. The institute acts as a living laboratory to attract and leverage research activities of multiple centers on Texas A&M campuses in College Station and Galveston, while connecting with coastal community leaders and stakeholders about their roles in creating a resilient community.
Natural Hazard Mitigation Association
The National Hazard Mitigation Association (NHMA) promotes natural hazard risk reduction through planning, adaptation and mitigation with emphasis on a whole of community approach.
